Packing and shipping are the last phases of a sales cycle but they are probably the most important. You need to carefully pack your items so that they get to the customers in one piece. What your customers see in your website or store should be the same when it arrives at their doorstep. There are many traditional ways to pack but some of them can be very wasteful. You don’t want to waste money and materials when packing because these are added expenses. You should maintain profit until you ship your products.
There are now new ways to pack your items. Check these out.
New blends of polymers and bubble wraps
What do you use to stuff your boxes? You probably use peanut foams, Styrofoam and bubble wrap. There are now new materials made from new blends of polymers that can absorb shock better than the traditional materials. Examples of these materials are Arcel and E-por. These are shock and crack resistant and more elastic than the foams you are used to.
The bubble wrap is a good invention but taking it to the next level is even better. You can now use a ChamberPak which is an inflated air tube. They come in various sizes and are mostly used to protect gadgets and electronics. The AIRmove Bubble Packing Machine is another breakthrough. You can create air cushions using a device that will pump and seal air into a roll of film. One roll of this is equivalent to 8 rolls of bubble wrap. Now that’s a lot of time and money saved!
Think software is just for design and programs? A software has been developed to help you figure out the best and most cost-efficient design for your packaging. Now you won’t have any troubles figuring out how to pack your odd-sized (and shaped) items. Different product sizes in one shipment are also a breeze for this software. This software will use several metrics to calculate the best box with the maximum protection but with the least material usage.
This is a big investment though with prices usually around $1,000 but they depend on the features that you want included in the software. If you are a small business, don’t fear. You can ask for help from universities with packaging programs. These universities aim to help companies such as yourself with packaging needs. They need you as part of their curriculum so you are actually doing them a favor. All you need to do is get on the phone and ask for an appointment.
Test your materials
You can also be more knowledgeable in the way you pack. You can have your product tested in a package testing lab and see how different shipment hazards can affect your product. They will also test different packing materials to see which one is best suited to protect your product. This service can cost anywhere from a hundred to a few thousand dollars. If you are serious about taking care of your products, this is a wise investment.
Remember that at the end of the day, your mission is to protect your product as best as you can for the least amount of money, energy and materials. Good packaging is cheaper than insurance so study the way you pack your items.
